Abstract

A simple physical model consisting of a flat surface covered with biologically active slime is used to simulate trickling filter operations. Process variable studies were conducted using glucose as the sole source of carbon in a mixed salt solution. Liquid feed rate has a marked effect on the rate of glucose use at low liquid rates. The results show that mass transfer in the liquid film limits nutrient removal; the top surface of the slime is the major site of metabolic activity.
