Abstract

This paper is devoted to the simulation of the flow patterns generated in a disc and doughnut column. A recent calculation method, including a k-ϵ turbulent model, was used. The calculated values of the mean velocities were compared with experimental results at Re = 6000, obtained by the laser doppler anemometry technique. The simulation results are displayed under the form of the flow velocity directions, stream lines and turbulent isokinetics lines. In addition, the turbulent characteristics of the flow (turbulent kinetic energy, dissipation rate and integral scale) are discussed with reference to the Reynolds number, the distance between a disc and a doughnut and the open free area.
