Abstract

The distribution of state of cure in a molded rubber component is usually nonuniform due to slow heat transfer processes involved in the molding/cooling cycle. In certain molding processes, the cure accumulated during the cooling process that occurs after a molding cycle can be a significant part of the total. In this work, prior simulation of the state of cure profile developed in a one-dimensional rectangular geometry is extended to consider the effect of the cooling conditions on the distribution of the state of cure. In addition, the effect of manufacturing process variation on the resulting state of cure distribution and the viability of the molding process is examined. Recommendations are made to minimize the effect of variation in process conditions.
