Abstract

1. When horizontal and moderately sloping ore deposits are worked by a system with caving, an increase in efficiency requires elimination of induced caving of the overlying rocks; furthermore, the parameters of the blocks must be tied in with the natural caving interval. 2. Studies on models enabled the authors to establish the dependence of stress distribution and value on the length of the cantilever of rock and its working depth, to find the dimensions of the region of propagation and value of the abutment pressure, to obtain by means of models a picture of rock fracture in the abutment zone during caving of the overlying rocks, and to derive a formula for calculating the limiting length of the cantilever of overlying rocks.
