Abstract

Drill-string guided waves contain information about the drilling conditions and can be used to transmit data from the bit location to the surface. Here we present an algorithm to simulate 3-D axis-symmetric wave propagation in a 2-D multidomain composed of mud layers, non-uniform pipe and formation. The method uses a cylindrical coordinate system, Chebyshev and Fourier differential operators to calculate the spatial derivatives in the radial and vertical directions, respectively. The results satisfy the reciprocity condition and agree with low-frequency simulation of wave propagation reported in literature.
