Abstract

This paper presents a finite element method (FEM) based simulation of partial discharge (PD) acoustic wave propagation, detection, and localization in a model transformer tank using COMSOL multiphysics software. The propagation of acoustic pressure wave due to partial discharge and its detection in a model transformer tank has simulated using a transient pressure acoustic module of COMSOL multiphysics. This simulation model has used to study the pressure distribution and attenuation of the partial discharge acoustic wave in a model transformer tank. The time of arrival (TOA) of the first peak of the acoustic pressure signal at different sensors located on the wall of the tank from the PD source is measured. Finally, the localization of simulated PD source at a different position in a model transformer tank has been done using the TOA based non-iterative method.
