Abstract

A Monte Carlo simulation, based on the EGS4 code, has been developed to study the response of the scintillation counters of the LSD and LVD underground experiments to low-energy electrons and gammas. Assuming that these particles are produced by cosmic neutrino interactions, they are studied for several energy values, from a few MeV up to 200 MeV. Here we discuss the results on event topology, linearity, energy resolution, and detection efficiency. The efficiency to detect the 15.11 MeV gamma line, emitted during 12C∗ nuclear de-excitation after neutral current neutrino interactions, is estimated.
