Abstract

The simulation of fermentation processes is seen as one of the major growth areas of engineering research. A few years ago most researchers would not consider modelling of bioreactions to be feasible due to the complexity of the systems. Now the situation is rapidly changing - perhaps caused by a growing cooperation between biologists and people from the physical sciences. The progress is illustrated by a review of the development of unstructured fermentation models into models which combine more mathematical detail with greater biological insight.
