Abstract
This paper presents the application of selected methods of a modern control theory with the aim to automatize the process of safe handling of the ship's movement. The descriptions contained in this paper show the structure of a multi-dimensional steering system, define the task of a safe steering and consequently models of the process and methods for determination of the ship's strategy in collision situations have been described. The considerations have been illustrated with examples of calculating safe ship's trajectory in situations of passing a various number of the objects encountered.
