Abstract

A simple simulation model is described for populations of the blue-green lucerne aphid (Acyrthosiphon kondoi Shinji) and used to determine the importance of factors regulating the population. It was applied to 1 field population and 1 in the laboratory. Existing information is insufficient to explain observed population behaviour. However, the model showed that production and dispersal of alates alone cannot account for population declines, that reduced reproduction and increased dispersal of nymphs and apterae are more important, and that the 3 factors are additive in terms of their effects on the logarithm of population density.
