Abstract

We numerically demonstrated six types of pulses in an Yb-doped fiber laser, including dissipative soliton (DS), dissipative soliton resonance (DSR), multipulse, noise-like pulse (NLP), breathing soliton and soliton explosion. The influence of cavity conditions on DSR pulse properties is discussed systematically. It is found that the change of the saturation power of saturable absorber (SA) could transform DSR into various types of pulses. Saturation power of SA and injected signal affect the number and shape of multipulse. Furthermore, the influence of the saturation power of SA and intra-cavity dispersion on pulse type is diagrammed intuitively. By properly adjusting the transmission curve of SA, breathing soliton and soliton explosion can be obtained as well.

Summary

Introduction

Mode-locked fiber lasers have been applied in material manufacture, biological microimage and defense communications in past decades. By changing the intra-cavity parameters of lasers, different types of pulses could be acquired, including DS, DSR, NLP, multipulse, breathing soliton and soliton explosion. NLP is a wave packet that contains numerous sub-pulses with different amplitudes and phases [11], which may attribute to nonlinearity instability [12], peak power clamping effect [13], soliton collapsing [14], or fiber birefringence [11]. We theoretically analyze the influence of saturation power of SA and intra-cavity dispersion on pulse properties in an ANDi Yb-doped fiber laser. After changing the parameters of the fiber laser, six different types of pulses, such as DS, DSR, multi-pulse, NLP, breathing soliton and soliton explosion were demonstrated in simulation. The results may offer new perspectives to view how to acquire DSR and various mode-locking states in mode-locked fiber lasers, and enrich the dynamics of different types of pulses
