Abstract

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) outlined, in the Essentials Documents, interprofessional communication and collaboration for improving patient and population health outcomes as competency expectations for graduates of baccalaureate, master's, and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs. In the 2011 publication, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) identified interprofessional teamwork as a core competency needed for health professionals to be effective in the twenty-first century.
