Abstract

In this paper, I describe an approach for integrating discussions of research methods into an introductory criminology course. I describe how one method—simulation—is introduced to students and how they analyze it critically while I communicate Coleman's concept of the culture of competition. This example is offered as a model for an introductory criminology course that pairs substance with methods to meet the needs of students who lack training in social science research methodology. This pedagogical approach facilitates learning by engaging students in a handson assignment, placing a methodological lesson in context, and enhancing critical evaluation skills.
