Abstract
Abstract — This paper presents the study of hardness profile ofspur gear heated by induction heating process in function of themachine parameters, such as the power (kW), the heating time (s) andthe generator frequency (kHz). The global work is realized by 3Dfinite-element simulation applied to the process by coupling andresolving the electromagnetic field and the heat transfer problems, and it was performed in three distinguished steps. First, a Comsol 3Dmodel was built using an adequate formulation and taking intoaccount the material properties and the machine parameters. Second, the convergence study was conducted to optimize the mesh. Then, thesurface temperatures and the case depths were deeply analyzed infunction of the initial current density and the heating time in mediumfrequency (MF) and high frequency (HF) heating modes and the edgeeffect were studied. Finally, the simulations results are validatedusing experimental tests. Keywords — induction heating / simulation / experimentalvalidation / 3D model / hardness profile
