Abstract

In loading process of TSHD (Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers), overflow is preferred if possible. The prediction of load and overflow losses is important for dredging production and environmental reasons. In this paper, based on Navier-Stokes equations and non-cohesive sediment transport empirical formulas, a three-dimensional numerical model was presented to simulate the loading and overflow process of TSHD. The model was compared with the typical Camp model. And then, a full-scale numerical model of TSHD XinHaihu4 was presented, the model was verified in a prototype situation by comparing with the measurements which were carried out onboard XinHaihu4 in DaFeng Waterway Engineering. Then a case with 4000 s loading time was simulated using the model of XinHaihu4, the loading process was analyzed to estimate the production and total overflow losses according to the results.
