Abstract
A two-dimensional model of an anode-supported planar SOFC operating with synthesis gas was developed based on co-flow and counter-flow configurations. Mass, energy and charge transport equations coupled with electrochemical reactions (H2, CO oxidation and O2 reduction) as well as chemical (water- gas shift) reaction were considered in the model. The performance comparison obtained from the model reveals that the cell performance for counter-flow configuration is higher than that of co-flow configuration. Unfortunately, due to the high temperature gradient at the fuel inlet region, the counter-flow configuration may not be the best mode of operation.
