Abstract

As part of the DOE ASAP program, the Center for Simulation of Advanced Rockets is pursuing. the simulation of solid propellant rockets. In this paper, the challenges inherent in simulating the fluid flow in such a rocket are discussed. Among the complications that must be accommodated are: complex geometry, turbulence, two phase flow with chemically reacting dispersed phase, and radiative heat transfer. Various simulation and modeling techniques are being pursued to handle thesecomplications, including: a multi-block compressible flow code, large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulence, particle dynamics and tracking and radiation hydrodynamics., The details of these modeling and simulation techniques in the context of the solid rocket problem are discussed., :-
