Abstract

A laboratory prototype of a generator producing a signal which approximates the long term average spectrum, instantaneous amplitude distribution, and syllabic structure of speech is described. Results of preliminary measurements of transmitting sensitivity/frequency responses and objective loudness ratings on six telephone sets with carbon transmitters using this signal indicate better agreement with results obtained with real voice than results of previous measurements done with sinusoidal and pseudo‐random signals.
