Abstract

The IEEE Std 344 (1975)1 on seismic qualification of Class 1E equipment for nuclear power generating stations recommends a combination of seismic-simulation vibration tests and computer-aided analyses to replace the need for prooftesting each variation of a basic equipment design. However, the shaking-table seismic test results indicate that the customary analysis of (assumed) linear-elastic structures can be misleading, unless further experimentation and engineering judgment are used to develop a valid computer model.
