Abstract

Results of extensive experimental programs and a parametric study by a numerical method of analysis are used to evaluate the suitability of the simplified formulae recommended in the ACI Code 318 and the Australian Standard 3600 to design reinforced concrete columns for eccentric loadings. Both these codes recommend equations to convert the unequal load eccentricities at the column ends to equivalent equal eccentricities. It is found from this study that the equations recommended in these codes overestimate the strength of columns with slenderness ratios in the practical range. A modified equation is therefore proposed which results in a conservative prediction of column strength.
