Abstract
We present a new physical and mathematical approach, which involves an extension of the effective potential idea, for determining the effect of various perturbations on a soliton. The method explains the results in a more simple way than has been done previously. We also analyze the interaction of two solitons as a function of their separation using this equivalent particle picture with an effective potential caused by the interaction.
