Abstract

Spectra in quantum-beat experiments are shown to be greatly simplified when multiphoton optical excitation occurs from the ground states of atoms which have been spin polarised by optical pumping. The method offers enhanced sensitivity in the determination of hyperfine interactions, and possible extensions of quantum-beat experiments to systems of high angular momentum and nuclear spin which otherwise would provide data intractable to analysis.
