Abstract

Utilising a previously developed approximate elastic-plastic method of analysis for sway frames, simple slenderness limits have been formulated to safeguard against excessive stability losses. The aspect of member stability is also addressed, so that all in-plane stability problems are covered by way of allowable slenderness values. A number of examples are presented illustrating the proposed approach. Lateral-torsional buckling and local web and flange buckling are excluded from this study.
