Abstract

This article describes the fundamentals of the approach and presents solutions for the effects of quasi-static deep undrained penetration of a simple solid pile on the deformations and strains in saturated isotropic clays and the deviatoric stresses in the outer soil located at some distance from the pile. Extensions of these solutions including stresses and pore pressures to more realistic conditions (e. g. , anisotropic clays and drained penetration in sands) by the strain path method are outlined. Evaluations of cavity expansion methods indicate that spherical expansion solutions have no direct application to pile installation studies and cylindrical cavity expansion solutions have the potential of providing predictions only in the outer elastic soil located at distances in excess of four to five radii from the pile axis and far behind the pile tip (about 10 radii).
