Abstract

A nucleon exchange model incorporating both the effects of the relative motion of the target and projectile and the internal motion of the constituent nucleons is developed to calculate the alignment and magnitude of the transferred angular momentum in peripheral heavy ion reactions. The model leads in a natural way to unequal components or angular momentum along the two directions perpendicular to the normal to the reaction plane, and explains the decrease in alignment for small energy losses in a physically transparent manner.NUCLEAR REACTIONS Nucleon exchange model distinguishing between effects of relative motion and Fermi motion. Magnitude and alignment of angular momentum transfer calculated for heavy ion reaction.
