Abstract

A simple questionnaire testing memory, vocabulary, calculation, orientation and speech, and practical tests with match sticks and toys were used to test ability in geriatric patients. The test was sufficiently simple for old people living independently at home to score full (45) or nearly full marks. Many geriatric patients (a mixed group of patients) had difficulty with part or all of the test. Scores of less than 30 were usually inconsistent with independence at home. Failure in part of the test drew attention to points requiring further clinical study. The test has been found an effective screening procedure. Many of the tests were carried out by occupational therapists and relatively unskilled observers can obtain consistent results which can be compared. Scoring allows the results to be easily understood by non-medical staff concerned with the patient’s care.
