Abstract

AIM: To design a simple method to estimate the longitudinal curvature of nail in normal patients and in patients with iron deficiency. OBJECTIVE: To detect the change in the curvature of nail with mild decrease in anaemia. BACKGROUND: Usual iron deficiency anaemia is established by blood measurements. It is well documented that severe anaemia is associated with marked koilonychia when the nail get flatter and eventually become concave. This study is a very simple method to find out whether the longitudinal curvature of the nail is decreased in mild decrease of anaemia . REASON: To gain experience in designing an experiment and also to produce a cost effective method to complement diagnosis of iron deficiency anaemia.
