Abstract

The process of emission of volatile degradation products from ion irradiated polymers is described by simple model assuming the presence of two types of chemical bonds, sensitive and insensitive to radiation induced cleavage, and random distribution of energy deposition events sufficient to cleavage of sensitive chemical bonds. The feasibility of the model is demonstrated on hydrogen and oxygen emission from polyimide (Kapton) irradiated with 100 keV Kr + ions to different fluences.
