Abstract

The kinetic-theory derivation of the classical second virial coefficient of real gases requires replacing a time-averaged quantity by its equivalent spatial average. A rigorous justification of this step is given for repulsive interactions which do not support bound states. This new derivation provides an explicit illustration of the ergodic hypothesis.
