Abstract

Summary A simple and rapid method is described for the production of carrier-free sodium-24 following the irradiation of magnesium with fast neutrons according to the nuclear equation : 24Mg (n, ρ) 24Na. Based on the irradiation of MgO or Mg(OH)2 in the presence of water followed by extraction of 24Na also with water and with a final purification stage, involving ion exchange, the described method should prove very suitable for work at Curie level. Detailed data are given for the pre-purification of the commercial magnesium target material and for its preparation as a slurry so as to take advantage of recoil products produced during the irradiation. Curves and data are presented showing the yield dependence on the water content of the magnesium target and of the efficiency of water as an extraction medium. In conclusion, the final purity of 24Na separated using the described method is discussed.
