Abstract
We apply simple potential models used by nuclear physicists in the early thirties to describe shell structure of large alkali metal clusters up to values of the angular momentum quantum number ι = 17. We develop more sophisticated analytic models using suitable perturbation operators in order to calculate not only correct magic numbers MN but also proper bunching of subshells up to 1432 electrons. From the calculated aufbau principle we derive a periodic table of alkali metal clusters.
