Abstract

This paper proposes the formulation of a new stability constraint to preventively control the transient stability of electric power systems. The transient stability constraint is formulated based on the linearization of the stability margin provided by the SIngle Machine Equivalent (SIME) method with respect to the mechanical powers of generators. Since this margin is not an explicit function of these parameters, an analytical formulation of trajectory sensitivities is used to achieve this goal. In this context, the transient stability study as well as the trajectory sensitivity and SIME methods are all integrated into a unified framework of time domain analysis to construct the proposed transient stability constraint. To numerically show the prowess of the proposed constraint, the Mexican 46-machine, 190-bus system is used as test system.
