Abstract
The role of effective medical team performance has become a priority in efforts to improve patient safety and care. Communication is a critical component of highly effective teams. There are however, few instruments that assess team communication as a factor in medical team performance. This paper outlines issues facing medical educators regarding the teaching and assessing of healthcare communication during undergraduate and graduate medical education. The paper describes the development of the SimCom-T, an instrument for measuring medical team communication as a unit during team training and assessment. The SimCom-T rating scale was refined over a number of innovative pilots including using a website-based feedback mechanism and through a series of interactive workshops at international conferences. The pilots have provided a broad range of responses to the SimCom-T development, and participants' input was used to revise the instrument to its current stage.
