Abstract

Trauma in the elderly, also known as ‘silver’ trauma is on the rise worldwide due to change in demographics and improved longevity. It is projected to be a significant burden on the healthcare due to the steady increase and the complexities around trauma in the elderly population. Due to variation in physiology and associated co-morbidities, management of the elderly trauma is difficult with poorer outcomes. Standard physiological parameters do not apply to these patients due to poor physiological reserve. The British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), along with other professional bodies has dedicated a set of standards to manage this complex group of patients in the BOAST guidelines in 2019. Trauma care within the elderly population must have a multi-disciplinary team approach from pre-hospital, in hospital and dedicated rehabilitation team.
