Abstract

To understand the role of Si in the oxidation resistance of SIMP steel, steels with three Si levels, 0, 0.58 and 1.22 wt.% (0Si, 06Si and 12Si for short), were tailored to investigate their oxidation behaviors at 700 °C. Continuous amorphous SiO2 film formed in 12Si steel enhanced adjacent Cr2O3 layer so that the formation of Fe2O3 layer could be prohibited resulting in an improved oxidation resistance. While discrete SiO2 films formed in 06Si steel could only offer inadequate protection to Cr2O3 layer, unable to prevent the formation of Fe2O3 layer. Related oxidation mechanism was also discussed systematically.
