Abstract

A series of hydrophilic and hydrophobic silicon-containing monomers, oligomers and polymers were investigated as sensitive coatings for the detection of hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons and alcohols in the gas phase using quartz microbalance transducers. The results show that the sensor signals were completely reversible with response and decay times on the order of minutes. The different thermodynamically controlled sensor parameters are discussed by considering their correlation with the boiling points and Ostwald solubility coefficients.
