Abstract

Silicon carbide (SiC) fibers with high mechanical and good thermal properties are suitable as reinforcements of composite materials. Among the various kinds of reinforcements, SiC fibers are regarded highly in the reinforcement of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs), mainly because of their excellent high temperature properties. SiC fibers produced via polymer pyrolysis especially have the advantage of flexible, fine-diameter form over those from chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or powder sintering processes. SiC fibers, such as Nicalon and Tyranno, synthesized from organosilicon polymers, have been produced industrially and applied widely to heat-resistant materials and to the reinforcements for composite materials.
