Abstract

A new type of alkali-activated cement, prepared from natural Pisha Sandstone and silica fume, was reported. The strength, water resistance, shrinkage, and hydration properties of alkali-activated uncalcined PS-based geopolymer cement were experimentally investigated. The compressive strength of APC with 10 wt% SF and 3 wt% NaOH could reach 44.8 MPa with a softening coefficient of 0.98 and shrinkage of 0.36%, at the age of 28 days. The hydration products of APC were mainly Si-Al gels (geopolymer). Adding SF to APC significantly enhanced the formation of Si-Al gels and increased the ratio of Si to Al in Si-Al gels, the higher ratio of which was associated with better mechanical properties and water resistance of APC. The strength, water resistance, and shrinkage of APC were similar to those of traditional cement, which could satisfy the requirements of most practical engineering applications.
