Abstract

Autopsy reports have shown that as clinicians we under-diagnose or fail to suspect pulmonary embolism (PE) in many of our patients. There have been several studies in the literature that indicate that the prevalence of PE in patients with diagnosed deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is quite high. This study combined data from 28 previous studies on silent PEs to estimate the incidence of PEs among patients with diagnosed DVTs. The authors of this study found that>30% of patients with DVTs without pulmonary complaints had positive diagnostic studies for PE.
