Abstract

Reports of disc batteries acting as foreign bodies in the aero-digestive tract, appeared in western literature in the mid 1970s. Here, we report an unusual case, of a battery impacted in the right bronchus of a seven year old, over twenty-five days. This was uneventfully removed. An inadvertant fall-out of the electronic revolution in our country, is that more cases will be seen in the future. Education of the lay public, regarding its lethal nature and proper disposal of used batteries is stressed. It is also the purpose of the authors to focus the attention of the Indian Otolaryngologist to the serious and sometimes fatal outcome which might ensue from this apparently harmless object. Due to its physico-chemical nature, rapid and early removal is advocated not only if the battery is lodged in the bronchus but anywhere in the aero-digestive tract.
