Abstract

The Asymptomatic Atrial Fibrillation and Stroke Evaluation in Pacemaker Patients and the Atrial Fibrillation Reduction Atrial Pacing Trial (ASSERT) reported that about 10% of the patients in a pool of 2850 selected subjects (older than 65years of age) with pacemakers had subclinical atrial fibrillation (AF). The study also reported that the risk of developing an ischemic stroke or systemic embolism was 2.5 fold higher for patients with subclinical AF, compared with patients without after a follow-up period of 2.5years [1].
