Abstract

Two cognitive schemas, Divided Self and Care As Self-sacrifice, relating the silencing of the self to intimate relationships were investigated for their association with norm discrepancy and double standard for gender in Greece ( n = 373) and in the USA (Americans, n = 333, Greek Americans, n = 66). Differences within gender and cultural groups were observed. Most strikingly, in Greece persons of each sex expected more self-sacrifice from those of the opposite sex.
