Abstract

SILENCE IS THE MOST FORGOTTEN of the divine names. Our world has grown too loud to appreciate the veneration that is silence. Reluctant to encounter the stillness and interiority on which it insists, the modern mind finds it all too easy to ignore the silence of God. It is only in and through this divine silence, however, that God's perfect love can be realized. It is where, according to Simone Weil, God reveals his truest self: "He who is capable not only of listening but also of loving hears this silence as the word of God. The speech of created beings is with sounds. The word of God is silence. God's secret word of love can be nothing else but silence. Christ is the silence of God." 1 T. S. Eliot likewise sees God's silence as the place where we meet his Word, insisting that
