Abstract
Ancient Tamil society gave importance to the concept of ethics. With the understanding that ethics had strongly permeated Tamils life at various levels, the relationship between Silapathikkaram epic and morality needs to be explored. Tamil society should approach Silapathikkaram with the understanding that it can get away with anything and not ignore basic moral guilt. Silambu’s narrative can be interpreted as a symbol of how a society moves to the next stage through accumulated guilt.
