Abstract

AbstractFour different types of composites were prepared based on unmodified and modified epoxy matrices: (A) unmodified epoxy/carbon fiber composites, (B) modified epoxy/carbon fiber composites by silane coupling agent/nano‐CaCO3 master batch, (C) modified epoxy/carbon fiber composites by nano‐CaCO3 particles directly, and (D) modified epoxy/carbon fiber composites by nano‐CaCO3 particles and silane coupling agent together. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the carbon fiber‐reinforced composites was investigated. The results show that the silane coupling agent/nano‐CaCO3 master batch can increase the ILSS to the highest degree. Nevertheless, Sample D, i.e., modified by nano‐CaCO3 particles and silane coupling agent together, even presents a decrease of the ILSS. The integration effect of silane coupling agent/nano‐CaCO3 master batch was concluded. POLYM. COMPOS., 2012. © 2012 Society of Plastics Engineers
