Abstract

Ciklamini mines the letters in Rutgers' Special Collections of Sigrid Undset (1882-1949), the Norwegian novelist, to Hope Emily Allen (1883-1960), the medievalist scholar. The letters date from 1940 until February, 1940 to December, 1948, written during Undset's exile in New York city (1940-1945) and after her return to Norway. The letters reveal Undset's love of New York city, her anguish over the Nazi terror in her homeland, and their shared interest in medival studies.
