Abstract

Content and FocusMost research within counselling psychology utilises traditional research designs which may not allow researchers to be responsive to the needs of their participants. Furthermore, in such methodologies limited emphasis is given to the participants’ experiences of taking part in the research. An Action Research project which entailed the initiation of a well-being team to help promote psychological well-being among a small number of physiotherapists is explored. The researcher’s experience and reflections on significant processes that comprise Action Research are highlighted. Additionally, values of Action Research which are congruent with the core ethos of counselling psychology are outlined.ConclusionsAction Research designs with an emphasis on respecting the co-researchers’ autonomy, empowering them to take ownership and encouraging action can be invaluable to the research endeavours of counselling professionals. Furthermore, counselling practitioners are at an advantage as they can utilise their therapeutic skills to deal with group processes while facilitating Action Research projects.
