Key Points The multiscale atmospheric overturning in the ERA5 and ERA‐Interim global reanalyses is compared using isentropic analysis Observed outgoing longwave radiation suggests that the mesoscale overturning in the tropics is better captured by ERA5 than ERA‐Interim Mesoscale overturning plays a comparable role to large‐scale overturning in vertical mass and energy transport over the tropics
