Abstract

In this paper, the author presents major changes in seismic design provisions from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 7-05 to ASCE 7-10, including changes to seismic hazard maps. In addition to a description of why changes in seismic hazard maps were necessary and the implications for seismic design, the article describes a number of other seismic provision changes. These include changes in design force requirements for anchorage between walls and diaphragms providing lateral support, changes in rules governing structural system combinations and height limits, and changes in the fundamental period for eccentrically braced frame and buckling-restrained braced frame systems.
