Significance of the nature of ligands of vanadium(II) complexes in reduction of nitrogen in homogeneous aqueous and alcoholic solutions

Abstract

1. Vanadium (II) complexes soluble in protic media are formed only with compounds containing HO or SH groups in the ortho position of the benzene ring. Complexes of 4-methylpyrocatechol, pyrogallol, and gallic acid reduce nitrogen to ammonia. 2. Heterogeneous systems based on vanadium (II) with phenol, resorcinol, or hydroquinone do not reduce nitrogen in alkaline media.
